my take on torque, (hopefully the final answer)

I guess I'm leaning in the camp of length matters (don't go there), it's just
that I always kept forgetting that the torque wrench no longer pivots about
it's head when the 2079 extension is in place. In any case, to corroborate
Phil's numbers here is the info for the AAN from the Bentley manual for
the '92-'97 100/A6 including S4/S6. This manual is nothing more than a
reprint of the Official Factory Repair Manual:

-------
Tightening Torque:
With spanner 2079: 350 Nm (258 lb-ft)
Without spanner 2079 450 Nm (332 lb-ft)

Coat threads and contact surfaces of bolt head with sealing paste AMV 188 001
02

Note: Spanner 2079 for vibration damper must align with torque wrench.
-------

In addition, to provide credence to the theory that the length of the torque
wrench matters to the torque setting when using an extension, here is the
info listed for torquing the viscous fan on the AAN, which also can be done
with an extension:

-------
Install viscous fan using torque wrench 1331, and fork wrench 3312.

Tightening torque:
Using torque wrench 1331 and fork wrench 3312 37 Nm (27 lb-ft)
Without fork wrench 3312 70 Nm (52 lb-ft)

Note: If other torque wrenches are used, refer to the following chart for
proper tightening torques:

Torque wrench length
(center of socket to center of handle)
220 mm 33 Nm (24 lb-ft)
280 mm 37 Nm (27 lb-ft)
300 mm 39 Nm (29 lb-ft)
440 mm 45 Nm (33 lb-ft)
-------

Let's put aside for a minute that the values seem to be backwards (at least
to me), but rather that Audi is listing different torque values for different
length torque wrenches.
