How about a couple of rows of bright white LEDs? I would think they are
focused enough so that you wouldn't really need a reflective surface
behind them, and they're getting nice and cheap now, so even if it doesn't
provide the results you're looking for you're not out much $$. Plus no
heat issues to worry about.
