The other reason is to allow for engine management to take into account more
variables than just the driver in managing the throttle position. In my '02
TT, the motronic 7.5 system is torque (oh my God!) based. Its inputs include
driver demand, A/C demand, steering pump demand, plus others. Outputs are
timing, boost, and throttle position, etc. It's actually interesting to see
the engine management system compensate for steering input and keep idle
rock solid at 800 rpm.
