Once working, these should stay working unless affected by some outside
influence - water due to negligence (as you have found) or a voltage spike
through faulty component(unusual). Kind of like Newton's law for
automotive electronics.
Helga's shower cap was the standard protection device used for these AFAIK.
When properly installed it assured unlimited protection. When improperly
re-installed, can cause more harm than good.
If the one you get used is working, then likely will stay that way. I have
no qualms about using used ECU's.
