I agree the 914 are great cars for the aircooled motors, being stuck in the middle of the chassis and all, and they're light enough a good stout motor provides a great deal of grin factor when playing. The one water-cooled conversion I rode in provided an eye-opening whoop of delight, and should the budget (and garage) ever allow it, I'd not turn down a Renegade conversion, chev 350 and a strengthened (or replaced with a g50?) gearbox. what fun. there was a renegade conversion web site out there, but it's not coming up right at the moment..

Couldn't agree more. I had the oppotunity to drive a 914 with the
conversion with a GM 305 in it. With cab and other tweaks was putting
out 265hp; what a fun ride. They can be absolute sleepers from outside
appearances. Little 195/65-15 tirea is all it had on it; nothing to
give it away. I've had 5 914's and the most fun seem to be the 2.0 73
or 74s with the handling package. A quick change of Bilsteins and
springs and WOW. Just a little go kart; with a body on it.
I was always skeptical of the reliability of them but drove different
ones between 6 and 10,000 miles in a summer season and never had a no
start or need to get towed. I liked that. Wasn't still convinced of
the reliability after 4 years and switched to Miata's.
