4ktq backfire

My KH powered 4ktq has begun backfiring when I shut it down.  It has 
only started since it has been cold outside.  At first it was a very 
slight thump like a tennis ball barely hitting the back of the car.  
When I got home from work today it was quite a bit louder.  Not quite a 
bang yet, but it still would have attracted attention if I had been 
around people.  Any thoughts on where to start?  I have not changed 
anything since I got the motor as far as CO or sensors.  Therefore I 
probably inherited any problems the PO had.
