Nope, the trunk will unlock regardless of whether the car has been unlocked 
or not, unless Audi has changed this for 2004.  I find this to be a very 
handy feature when shopping because shutting the trunk after putting 
parcels into it will automatically lock the trunk and re-arm the alarm 
system without having to press the lock button on the remote. Just press & 
hold the trunk unlock button for a second or two to get the trunk to open.
