metric tools - not so dumb question?

In the UK it seems to be changing slowly to litres/100km, and I think in
the last car advert I bothered to look at in detail it gave both miles per
gallon (mpg) and the metric measure, but, as in other areas, we have been
slow in converting to metric from the old imperial measures.
Its probably EU law that the metric measure must given, but to anyone over
30 y.o. or so the mpg figure is the one that we understand! Meanwhile sales
of petrol are now exclusively in a price per litre, e.g. I just filled up
with fuel at 78.9 per litre and now have to convert to gallons before I can
find out my m.p.g. (27 for the last tankful). Given the cost of fuel here
it goes something like 30+ mpg - good!, 25-30 Ok, less than 25 poor, less
than 20 ruinous!
I think both our gallons and miles are slightly different to the US ones,
which always results in US cars seeming to get less MPG than us. No doubt
someone can supply a comparison between the two.
Cheers,
rob
