Long term damage from partially obstructed Cat (95 90q)

Hi all the Audi woos again.  Car quite on way home the other night just as I
was preparing for 350 mile trip north.  I just stopped sputtered a little
but nothing.  It is in a shop now.  Question is what are the long term
effects from a Cat that was rattling and possibly partially clogged.  Could
this be the root cause of car dieing?
