anyone mod their own mufflers?

I was wondering if anyone has torn into their mufflers, most
particularly for a 5 cylinder turbo, and what have they done.

The reason why I ask is because a friend of mine, a BMW factory tech
(with ALOT of practical knowledge), does stuff like this. He gets
alot of free parts from his dealership off of certified preown cars,
such as exhausts. He put an m3 exhaust on his 3 series, but opened
the muffler, removed the baffling, then closed it back up. This past
week, he mod'd another, this time, he removed the baffling and made a
ramp, of sorts. Sounds really good and quiet at idle, but really
crazy at wot.

Just wondering, since I have a welder to play with now...
