Tranny problems?

Stephane -
So you're familiar with the way those two connecting rods work (I take
it you did the clutch yourself)? I'll go into a little detail for sake
of the list and to make sure we're on the same page.
The "push rod" connects the base or socket of the shifter to a static
point on the transmission. The "shift rod" connects several inches up
the shifter itself to the shift lever on the tranny. The push rod just
references the shifter's motion. Page 34.6 in the Bentley has a good
diagram.
Each of these rods has a front half and a back half, joined by a clamp.
One of these (I think the push rod's) got loose on my car. The
easy-shifting gears like 3rd and 4th continued to behave fine, but the
worn gears (esp. reverse) required more force than the clamp would
transmit, so the shifter base would move instead. You could tell that
the shifter was moving in a different geometry than usual.
To align things, the Bentley suggests loosening everything, centering
the shifter (with special tool #3048 or special spouse #1), and
retightening. Then you just check that the full range of shifting is
permitted and that the overtravel is equal to both sides.
It doesn't sound like this is the case on your car, though...
