VAG parts # format

Hi!

Not very much but you can get some information out of the 3-3-3
format:

The first 3 digits/letters denote (in some way) for which
platform the part was intended. There are a number of
cross-overs, though.

The first digit of the second set denotes the part group of the
part. As in XXX-4XX-XXX you can guess, that part somewhere belongs
to the front drive train or suspension, a 3 means gearbox etc.
The "main-group" number in the family album reflects that.

The rest of the numbers are (AFAIK) arbitrary. On some parts
(relays or similar) only the last 3 are stamped on.

What you probably already guessed: the last letter only nominates
different generations of the same part (an update), sometimes
a differrent brand (Hella vs. Bosch headlights) or slightly
modified parts for a different configuration (like clear
turn signals opposed to amber or the like).
