yes, it's the same, it should oscillate steadily up and down around 0 mA
(when warm).

I don't do anything special, just warm up the engine and do the
measuring.  This is probably wrong though, there's bound to be
*something* silly you are supposed to do.  The "all makes, all models"
computer next door instructs you to put a 10A fuse in the fuel pump
relay... ?!

Not too sure what the Bentley says, I should look it up sometime.

That check engine light might indicate that the ignition has gone to
full retard - but that would require knocking, a bit odd on an engine
that is running plug-soaking rich, right?  maybe it is lean sometimes,
too?  Or maybe the knock sensor os bad.  Or the ignition computer...
could be damaged by water leaking in around the windsheild.

Maybe the air plate is sticking - up a bit - then at idle there would be
too much fuel, but at higher rpms, if you can get there, not enough?
