Well, chances are it had that play before he changed the bearing too, Audi strut bearings are notoriously "loose", any up and down movement either implies that the top nut is loose or that the play is in the bearing, and if the bearing is anything but brand new there is likely some play in it. Bearings are a $15 part, I'm in the habit of changing them whenever I have the strut off within reason. He mentiones that he already addressed tightening, unless he's just not being careful, it sounds like a SB to me.
