nac-need bmw 325/e36 tranny

Sorry to post a little OT as well, but are these trannies a problem with E36
Bimmers? My roommmate's 94 325 needed a new tranny at 85k miles and the one
that replaced it (also used) feels like shifting a tank to me....even my
original 215k mile-crunchy syncro-weak slave cylinder Coupe has better shift
feel.
Sorry, just a general gripe about my experience driving that Bimmer last
week while the window regulator was done on my Coupe.
Anyone else with bad BMW tranny experiences like mine?
