It kinda sounds like the new struts don't have enough oomph to open the
lid far enough away from the striker plate.. If you hold the handle can
you get your wife to lift the lid and see if it will open? Did you put
the struts in the correct way? Dunno what happens if you put them on
upside down..

I would agree that it is probably that the trunk isn't "popping" when the latch is released.

Also, I think the latch and cable is at the bottom, not on the trunk lid, so the cable shouldn't be affected by over extending the trunk lid.  Actually, I think it's nice that there is the option to rest the lid on the window if there are no good struts available.
