New struts will not compress even when I balance my whole 150 pounds on
them.  Ones that will slowly compress that way are sometimes strong
enough to hold the lid open, though.

Also (unless the seize or something), the struts are completely
irrelevant to the opening mechanism, and whether or not the lid will
open.  Many coupes run around for years with no struts or dead struts
and a stick int he trunk to hold it open.
