Spark Plug Wire How-To?

Hello all,
I have already been through the search and found nothing.
I am working on building my own set of plug wires using VW 16v ends - but I
am trying to figure out how to affix the wires inside the connector (the
long one that connects to the spark plug).
Looks to me like you insert the wire in and crimp down on the shank...but I
don't want to go ruining these fancy-schmancy wire ends.
Anyone been there, done that?
