Don't know why it should have something to do with the fuel pump (you did
pull the battery cable for that, did you?) but the type 89's instrument
panels are notoriously unreliable. I've had one with total backlight
failure, could be fixed only by replacing the PCB behind the instruments.
The PCB traces are prone to cracking, maybe you'll be able to fix yours by
soldering.
