Most shocks these days are gas-charged, which means they expand all the
time, and do provide some support for the weight of the car. My 300ZX had
a bad rear camber problem because the rear shocks were so worn, when I
replaced them I got back 2-3 degrees of camber back at rest, and my
excessive tire wear has been curbed. The car sits about 1" higher in the
back now, too. As to springs, yes they wear out, at 178K I'd say they were
almost definitely settling a bit.
