Recent experience with fitting 4 new bilsteins to my 1990 90 20v q is that
the car does now sit higher than before, around 1 inch, the old shocks were
very worn and the new ones considerably harder than oem so i am not
surprised that it sits higher than before.

Most shocks these days are gas-charged, which means they expand all the
time, and do provide some support for the weight of the car. My 300ZX had
a bad rear camber problem because the rear shocks were so worn, when I
replaced them I got back 2-3 degrees of camber back at rest, and my
excessive tire wear has been curbed. The car sits about 1" higher in the
back now, too. As to springs, yes they wear out, at 178K I'd say they were
almost definitely settling a bit.
