The rules of thumb I go by are:
white = water
blue = oil
black = fuel
That is, a white exhaust indicates water, either condensation in/from
the exhaut system, or water from the cooling system getting into the
combustion chamber. The strong odor indicates more than just
condensation.
Blue exhaust indicates oil burning. And black indicates carbon from
too much fuel (rich mixture).
