Hmm, have you checked for sure that the timing is
still locked at 12* BTDC?  If they ever did the TB,
lifters, or water pump it could have been thrown off
some how.  I would start there, and also pull the
codes, they can be rather useful.  It has to be pretty
far out of wack to allow that ignition to ping so you
can hear it.  Something minor like cooler plugs
probably will not help things.
