OK, when it pings, do you ever get a flashing engine light?
If the computer goes into full-retard, it is supposed to light it.
If the engine knocks, it is supposed to retard it, and fast - so you
don't even here the tiny hints of detonation that it picks up on and
acts on.
I think your knock sensor system is not working properly.
Yes, replace the cap and rotor, or at least take a good look at them.
Check the torque on the KS, it's supposed to be pretty light, I think,
and make sure it is mounted cleanly. Make sure it is connected properly
to the wiring, as well.
Try unplugging it - any difference?
Just a few random thoughts... I hope some might help.
