I understand your point. When something is broken, treat it with silk
gloves, and maybe you can postpone the repair a few more months. You
might argue that the ZF/Audi design is so bad that it was "broken"
before it left the factory, and I'd still understand what you mean.

On the other hand, the rack *should* be able to handle this treatment.
In fact, that overpressure valve is there to avoid damage in this kind
of situation.

The Haynes manual actually describes this procedure as part of regular
maintenance when looking for hydraulic leaks.
