One major step further, 5Ks wagon

Hi all,

Well I took the plunge, and started the engine even with out that vacuum
line properly hooked up. I tried to crank and got a very slow, intermediate
crank. The battery is brand new.

When I had this before the head job someone mentioned a splice issue and
that the Audifan archives would have a solution. I searched ad found
nothing, so, if someone could direct me to a web page etc that would great.

I hooked up my truck and boost started the car. There was a lot of chatter
from the valves, figured it was just the assembly lube and not much oil yet.
(did crank the motor until oil squirted up to the cam).

After 2 minutes the clatter settled down a bit but was still noisy, I think
the dizzy may be off a tick. So I will have to look into that.

When the engine ran for about 4 minutes, smoke starting rising from the
engine, not to worry, all of the crap burning off the exaust manifold :-)
while all of this was going on I checked the tailpipe and the black crap
that was coming out before was still coming out! I start thinking, "oh no,
I didn't fix the problem". The longer the engine ran, the gunk coming out of
the tailpipe cleared up, woo hoo, must have been all of the left over stuff
in the motor and exaust.

I then figured I would try luck and turned off the engine, no leaks, good
thing :-). Go to start again and still hard to turn over, need the boost
from the truck. Really need to solve that.

Overall, very happy so far, couple of minor things to tackle, the engine is
a lot more responsive to the pedal.

Are there any tips about the following:

- cranking slow to no crank. - chattering valves, could it be timing off a
little?

Thanks and regards
