Since no one else seems to be jumping on this, I'll give you
my two cents. If there are no Audis in your area, and you've
never driven a quattro, head for the nearest dealer and test
drive something close to the specification you are looking
for (though it is doubtful you'll find a Type 44 Avant on their lot).

If you know what you want, then you may have to travel. A lot
can be accomplished via the internet and email. Start with the
audifans.com marketplace. Check the "mechanics" list in there,
too. You may find a local mechanic that also sells cars on the
side, or knows of cars for sale.

Then try autotrader.com, ebay.com motors, and hemmings.com
if you want an older Audi. I like to "window shop" karquattro.com
and autohaus-vt.com. You might also try a google.com search
on "audi avant 'for sale'".

When you find something you like, ask the seller a thousand
questions until there is no doubt in your mind.  Ask for pictures;
ask for pictures of specific areas of the car. See if you can find a
local-to-the-seller independent Audi shop to perform a pre-sale
evaluation. Finally, factor in the cost of a one-way ticket (plane,
bus, train) to pick up your new car. Or factor in the cost of putting
it on an auto transporter to bring it to your door.

Use the list. If you find something that interests you, but you don't
have a lot to spend, ask if a lister in the area can look at the car for
you. You may be surprised at the offers of help.

If you buy a US spec car, it may need to be converted to Canadian
spec. I don't know the details (mph vs. kph speedometer, maybe
lighting and emissions issues), but it is one more thing to consider.

And let us know what you get.

Cheers,
Kent
