talking to the local lead tech about an rs4 rebuild he is currently doing,
he said that audi had done a lot of work to make dropping the motor from the
latest cars a fast and simple operation.  he also said that this was the
best (and recommended) way to do a number of tasks where modern packaging
prevents easy access.  certainly he was talking nothing like 40 hours to
drop a motor.

after having been quite interested in the w8, the more information i get on
it, the less impressed i am.  it is significantly heavier, significantly
less powerful,  and only marginally smaller than the new audi v8 for
instance.  i think the audi engine guys will be feeling pretty pleased with
themselves...

Timing chains are great, but only when they're up front. This subject
came up at the annual NEQ meeting Saturday, over dinner.  Want to
take a guess at how many hours it took a -factory trained W8
specialist- at a dealership to remove a W8 from a Passat?(the only
way to get to said chain.)

FORTY HOURS(!)

Before anyone gets all uppity about chains being better than belts,
let's say there was a -reason- the tech was dropping the engine, and
it wasn't for s&g's.  Keep in mind how old the W8 is.  Ahhh, I hear
those wheels grinding upstairs already! :-)
