Having just done both sides very recently, I must say all I needed to do was
to take the new bolt that came with the boot kit and screw it all the way in
and the joint popped out. Make sure that the joint is aligned with the axle
shaft.
I assume that the rotor/caliper is out of the way and that the end of the
axle shaft and joint are accessible. I didn't have to remove the axle
either.

I can't get off the front outer CV joints on my '88 90tq. It has the
two-piece strut housing which, I think, uses a larger CV joint than the
one-piece version (I don't know if that affects my situation). I've tried
screwing the large center bolt in all the way to push the CV joint off of
the shaft. I've tried inserting a small rod through the bolthole and
against the shaft and then using a puller. I've tried holding the shaft and
knocking off the joint with a plastic-faced hammer. The axle is on the car,
I should note, and I'd rather not take it off.
