98 A6 idle problems

My 98 A6 avant is having some issues.  My wife was stuck behind an accident=
 for about an hour and she let it idle.  After about 45 minutes it died.  I=
t started right back up but she had to hold her foot on the gas to keep it =
going.  I got home a few hours later and tried to make it happen and it doe=
s start fine but when I put it in gear and then back to neutral it dies. Al=
so if you hold the peddle just a little down it stumbles.  The vaccum lines=
 look a bit crispy so I am planning on replacing them.  But are there any o=
ther ideas of what could be causing this.
