Aaron-
Sounds like Dave already answered your questions, but I have a couple of
tips to add...
I'll concur with his excellent advice to always remove the fill plugs first.
I laughed out loud at his account of filling the B*W tranny. Must have been
wonderful to be coated with gear oil. Repels water and smells great too!
You'll need a 17mm allen wrench to remove the plugs. I got mine relatively
cheaply at Sears although any good tool house should have it. It may also
be useful to have the same 17mm tool in a 3/8" socket drive. This allows
you to apply much more torque if they are stubborn. Make sure you scrape
the gunk out of the hole in the plug so your tool goes all the way in. The
hole is shallow and it's easy to strip them. Be patient. You don't want to
strip these babies! If you have access to a torch, a quick shot of heat
will free them up. The plugs in my car ('86 4kq) are steel, although I've
heard some mention of later cars coming with plastic plugs to eliminate any
corrosion issues.
As far as lube goes, there are many opinions out there. The owners manual
(and the Bentley) says use GL-4 only for the trans and GL-5 for the rear
diff. This is necessary to preserve proper syncro function. I happen to
use Amsoil synthetic in my tranny and I like the way it shifts. You can use
any brand, just make sure it's straight GL-4, not GL-1 through 5 or
something else. Trust the engineers who built your tranny!
Lastly, a good trick for filling the tranny is to get a 3 foot length of
1/2" rubber hose (heater hose works good) and a funnel. Open the hood, and
stick the hose down into the hole in the side of the tranny. Stick the
funnel on top and fill. Pour a measured amount of GL-4 in and you should be
good to go. It's also a good idea to feel inside the fill hole with your
finger after you're done to make sure you didn't mis-measure. It may take
some time to get it all in as the fluid takes a while to "settle" into the
various areas of the tranny and diffs. You will probably need some sort of
pump for filling the rear diff. Good luck, hope this helps!
