proper engine temp. (was Heater Core Problems on 1989 90)

Hmmm,

And I get sub 130 degrees C year round with 10w30 in the winter and 20w50 in
the summer. It will track up to 130*C during a track day. Please note I
haven't had A/C so I can't comment on it's effect on the oil temps.

Oil Temp, imho, should _always_ reach at least 100*C in order to boil off the
condensation and other crap that gets into it...regardless of the season. If
the H20 cooling system is working correctly, it should be regulating the
temperature year round...and always at the same time. Up here in Canada I've
never experienced lower temps in winter...unless it's minus 30 degrees, or
there is something wrong with my car.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with your car...but it is curious indeed.

As for whether the gauge is correct, I'd guess no. 10% off wouldn't be an
unfair assumption.

The big question, I suppose, is are you sure your rad-fan is turning on
correctly? The thermostat is supposed to control engine temperature during
warm-up and while driving. The rad fan controls engine temps while stopped (as
there is no airflow)...but the rad fan ALSO supplements your driving airflow
when needed.

Thinking about the 'problem' further, I could see an argument being made for
speed '1' on your fan not working properly. It could be possible that your
engine thinks it's switching to speed one, but the fan isn't working...the temp
creeps up and eventually speed two kicks in, evening out the system. A
possibility, perhaps, but Huw certainly knows electrical better then I do...so
I've copied him on this email.

HTH, or at least gets discussion going!
