definitely possible - my old sender was only running one speed when it
died and did none.

So you can lose one speed and never really notice, esp. if it the slow
one.

But Dave's comments about gauge/sender accuracy are valid, if you're
really worried, use a benchmarked device to measure temps and see what
is really happening.
