K&N air filters add 5-10%? Also: xenon?

K&N claims it sits on the surface, effectively adding to the filter
medium. All I know is that I put one in and got a dramatic improvement. 2
years and >30k later I cleaned it becasue it looked dirty to me. It came
out good as new and I didn't notice much change in horsepower.

You guys don't seem to like bigger exhaust for turbo performance, either.
To each their own.

If the filter's good enough for an Apache turbine in the arabian desert,
it's enough for me for my piston-pusher in the city.

I agree that the performance improvement isn't all that dramatic with a
type 44T stock replacement filter for all the reasons you said- just not
enough area. If you could replace the factory filter housing with
something else you'd find a huge difference between paper and oiled
cotton. I've got 90k on my K&N now, and no evidence of dirt in the motor.
