Engine stalling at about 1800 rpm.

Hello fellow Audifans.
It's been the coldest day of the year so far, temperature dropping to -28 Celsius. My V8
started OK
even without a block heater. I drove the children to school, about 4 kms, and as I was
pulling out of
the parking lot accelerating in the first gear, the engine balked and stalled just under
2000 rpm.
I shifted into second gear and the car moved OK but as soon as I pressed harder on the gas
pedal,
the engine would stall again at about 1800 - 2000 rpm. This time, I put it into neutral
and let the rpm
drop. It dropped to about 1000 rpm and idled evenly. It would not drop, however, to its
normal
idling speed of about 650 rpm. Another try, this time a bit harder on the gas pedal, and
the car
accelerated normally going well to about 3500 rpm. Another try and it would stall again.
Any clues? The idle speed is now higher, about 1000 rpm so this tells me something is
wrong.
The stalling problem seems to be intermittent. Thanks to all helpful souls on this
newsgroup.
