Coolant was changed this fall with 50/50 Pentosin/water mix. I have never
really checked it specifically, however..

Sounds like the coolant in either your radiator, or your lower hose is
frozen. Have you been topping off your coolant with water?
Happened to me last year. Had a weeping leak from the heater core for a
year or so. Had been adding a cup or two of water every month or so.
(yeah, I'm an idiot)
First day it got into the negative temps, my lower radiator hose froze
solid. Did exactly the same thing yours did.
I pulled mine in the garage, aimed a heater at the frozen area, and was on
my way in a half hour. (after adding some antifreeze....)
I wouldn't think it is a thermostat problem if the top hose has heat in it.
If the thermostat was stuck closed, I think it would still be cold.
Good Luck!
