Well I have got a little bit further, the Haynes manual stated that the cam
should be set with the mark on the frontside of the sprocket in line with
the mark on the timing cover, Bentley told me different, it should be set
with the mark on the rear of the sprocket, in line with the top of the cyl
head, therefore my camtiming was radically out
So that done, at tdc on 1 on the compression stroke I have.... Cam timing
mark aligned, bottom pulley mark aligned to timing cover, and 0 degrees on
the flywheel lined up in the bellhousing window. I haven't checked the mark
on the intermediate sprocket again, so I am assuming that to be still in the
correct orientation. Ht leads are in the right place on the dizzy cap, ie
at tdc, the rotor arm points approx at 1, then clockwise: 3,4,2.
Crank the engine and I get some attempt at starting, slight intermittent
pops and huffs. I am working on the premise still that I have a good spark
on all 4. I am convinced it is dizzy timing, BUT, the dizzy seems frozen in
place, and it is a right pita to move it, but I think I need to pull it and
reset it as per the Bentley. Ie, the slot in the dizzy drive should be
inline with the clamp bolt hole, then the rotor arm should line up with the
slot in the dizzy upon reassembly.
