tips on rebuilding my starter

I have a bunch of extra type 44 starters and wanted to rebuild one
unit out of the parts of the three. One has a bad solenoid. One has a
bad armature. One is a bad VW rebuild that works well, except for the
cracked case and the seized bearings since new (had to whack it once
a year on the first day of winter).

Anyway, I have enough to put together one starter out of all three.
ANy tips? I'd hate to reuse brushes, so anywhere I can get 'em from?
