typ 89 90q vs mk2 golf gti

After recently driving my recently acquired golf gti (1989 1.8 16v) I am
feeling quite disappointed with how my 90q (10v) feels in comparison.  The
golf seems to pull better in high gears (ie motorway 70mph, 5th gear approx
3000 rpm) I swear the golf pulls quicker than my 2.3, surely there is
something wrong here, the 16v was renowned to be not very torquey, while the
10v cars are built on the stuff.
Anyway any similar comparisons would be useful, ive owned several 10v cars
now and have never really known if they drive as quickly as they should.
These are both euro cars, the golf has 139hp, the 90 has 132....
