The German morons who built a W123 series 240D that would go 500,000
miles with normal maintenance, before needing engine teardown. The high
mileage champ is a 1968 W115 220D with over 1,011,453 miles recorded on
it's Engler Hubodometer, during it's daily 254 mile round trip for 11
years on I-5 in Oregon. Short block was replaced at 900,000 miles.

If you checked the spare tire pressure every fuel fill up, every 300
miles or so, and kept a alcohol water mixture in the bottle, system
worked as planned. It MUST have worked since over 20 million VW
beetles have been produced.
Too many of today's motorist is lazy...needs electronic gizmo's to keep
track of normal service items, oil level, oil change frequency, WW
fluid level, coolant level, brake fluid level, gasoline level AND
buzzar!
