Hi Y'all,

I'm not rightly sure that this really qualifies as a true Monkey Lad tale
because the two Monkey Lads of concerns were (no longer _are_) the chief
Audi tech and the service manager of my local fiendly (sic) stealership.

One of my previous rides, my first '89 200tq, was having the classic
"bouncing speedometer" syndrome. It that time of my Audi "career" I was
still depending on the stealership for service and repairs. I took the car
to them. It was diagnosed as a bad printed circuit board inside the
instrument cluster. They kept the car and the next day I was presented
with a bill for exactly $666. Something about that number should probably
have alerted me but... Of that $666, $301 was for a new replacement PC
board for the cluster.

On the way home (60 miles one way) the speedo started bouncing again. I
turned around and spoke a few words with them. They apologized and
"repaired" it while this time I waited for it. On the way home it again
started bouncing again. I went on home.

Once back home I pulled the instrument cluster myself and started
disassembling things. I found the same old PC board with exactly four
droplets of fresh solder on it. Need I say that the tech, the service
manager, and I went a few rounds over that. I won the decision but it
wasn't a knock-out. I probably should have charged them with fraud but I
didn't. I did get my money back.

Needless to say, my car never enters their shop unless _ALL_ other
possibilities have been exhausted. And then I watch them like a hawk. Oh
- that service manager and Audi tech are no longer there.

The stealership is Bert Wolfe Porsche, Audi, Toyota, Ford, etc., of
Charleston, WV. I do not recommend them for service. Actually, they
usually do OK with the repairs but they are, ahem, a bit careless with
their billing practices. As far as a place to purchase a car they are
pretty good. I bought my present ride, a '96 urS6, from them for a quite
reasonable price compared to what the car would have gone for elsewhere in
the country at the time.
