How do you get more $ from insurer for totaled vehicle? (NAC)

Anyone know the procedure for trying to squeeze a few more bucks out of an
insurer for a vehicle declared "totaled"?

My son's 87 Jetta was hit by runaway neighbor's car. Definite frame damage so
I agree it is totaled, but the payout ($950) seems light compared to what I
see other like vehicles selling for.
