87 - 5KCSQT - Oilters & Noisy lifters...

Hello,

I was picking up an oil filter from "All European Autowerks" in Kent, WA.
The filters that they had were the Knecht brand - Also listed Mahle on the
box as well. I am pretty sure that the archives stated that this brand was
on the list of filters that was favored higher than Fram. Can anyone
confirm this?

While I was at the shop, the owner of the shop mentioned that I should be
able to quiet the lifter noise by adding a quart of ATF fluid and running
the engine for about 500 miles then changing out the oil. The ATF is
supposed to clean out the accumulated gunk contributing to the noise. Any
thoughts on this technique? A complete lifter kit runs + cam seal runs
about $110. A quart of ATF is less than $5. I'd rather not make a bad move
when trying to save a few $$$.

Thanks again for all the insight.
