When the new oil would only shut mine up for a couple hundred miles I
broke down and tossed a new set in.  Open the clamshell, remove valve
cover, cam bearings, tilt cam forward, out with the old, in with the new.

Result: dead silence.

I think when an engine has 250k miles on it you can expect to replace a
few parts to keep it running well!
