Andy;
Just had a similar experience with a 1990 80. The fault ended up being in
the steering lock portion of the mechanism; not in the electrical switch
part. The mechanical part that also serves as the steering column lock
failed. Inside the matching surface;between the plastic electrical switch
part and the metal lock part; there is a flat drive pin. It is kind of like
a flat blade screwdriver. The male part in the lock then fits into a
matching receptacle in the plastic electrical part. The part that is like a
flat screwdriver breaks off; it then renders the key useless. The key will
turn but will not turn the electrical switch. The steering column lock
with the key needs to be replaced; not the electrical part. At least that
was the failure mode I saw in mine; sounds similar to yours.

Good luck

I've been ignoring this thread, and it has bitten me in the ass. The
ignition switch in my '88 90Q died tonight at the bank ATM. The car shut
off fine, but would not restart. Seems to be stuck in the on/run position.
Bump started it on my own, and would not shut off when I got it home. Had
to pull the fuel pump relay to get it die, then I disconnected the battery
to keep it from draining. The key seems to cycle fine with the exception of
the springy feeling between run and start, which is totaly gone. But there
is no change in electical mode at any key position. Any help would be much
appricated, including Bently pages I should look at, parts suppliers, and
above all a BTDT.

Thanks in Advace,

Andy '88 90Q
