The 4 cylinder engine's water pump is relatively easy to change
and if you have some skills you should be able to do it yourself.
The pump is v-belt driven, and the replacement pump is just
the front half of the water pump unit (get a German made replacement
only). Based on my memory, all you have to do is loosen the
belt, remove the lower radiator hose and drain coolant (for safe
disposal), remove the pulley from the pump (3 bolts), remove the
pump unit from the block (another few bolts), remove the lower
thermostat flange from the pump (2 bolts), separate the two
halves of the pump (undo a bunch of bolts and pry it apart).
Clean the mating surface of the back half of the pump so it's
clean and free of all gasket material. Bolt new pump into the
original back half housing with a new gasket and sealant, Install
housing onto block with a new o-ring (clean the mating surface there
too), and install a new thermostat, o-ring and the flange. Re-connect
hose, flush system and fill with new coolant, reattach pulley and belt.
Voila.
