Sounds like the quality of the ground connection when you are measuring
the battery isn't as good as when you are up front. Try using a long
wire for the ground so it is the same in both cases, and make sure your
positive lead is making full contact with bare metal.
It also sounds like you have one or both of these problems... bad splice
thingie in the main battery cable (under the carpet) and/or a tired battery.
