One thing to try is to determine who makes the chip that drives the video
display.  Then surf to the manufacturer's website and see if they have a
later driver than what's in your laptop.  In the case of my old Satellite
4005CDS (Win98), the inherent display resolution is 800x600, but the Chips
and Technology 65550 chipset driver permits virtual displays of 1024x768
and 1280x1024.  The scrolling display is a little pain but is perfectly
legible.  On my newer laptop which runs a S3 Savage IX chipset and Win2K, I
used a WinXP driver to achieve the same purpose.
