Hey all,
I'm currently working on some 4000 quattro suspension articles for both my own
car, and the Knowledge Base. I've just picked up a set of Koni Yellows and B&G
springs for my 4kq. But, as I have no experience with the koni's, I'm unsure
as to what setting to put them on. Obviously I'd like to get the rears dialed
in right away, as you have to pull them out of the car in order to change the
settings!
My thoughts are to compile a database of suspension set-ups on the 4kq. If
everyone who has a non-stock suspension in their 4kq answers some simple
questions, I can create a database that will allow folks to consider which
direction they want to go, before they buy any parts. Having one or two people
who have rebuilt their stock suspension might help as well.
If this works out well with the 4kq, I'll set-up databases for the following
cars: 80/90 quattro, Coupe GT's, UrQ. After those are done I'll put out a
request for public demand on other vehicles of the Audi family. I suspect
100LS owners will need an extensive database on available coil-over set-ups ;-)
In order to create the database I'm looking to have everyone who owns a 4kq
answer the following questions:
1) Model and Year:
2) Front Shocks:
3) Front Springs:
4) Rear Shocks:
5) Rear Springs:
6) Tire make and size:
7) Rim make, model and size:
8) Front Shock Setting (if appropriate):
9) Rear Shock Setting (if appropriate):
10) Ride height with empty car:
11) Other suspension modifications:
12) Percentage of commuting use for vehicle:
13) Percentage of 'sprited driving' use for vehicle:
14) Percentage of Track use for vehicle:
15) Alignment settings:
16) Please comment on how your suspension set-up feels, as well as it's
advantages and disadvantages.
Here's a fictional example of how I'd answer the above questions with my 4kq:
1) Model and Year: 1987 Audi 4000cs quattro
2) Front Shocks (w/part number if possible): Koni Yellows - XXX-XXXXX
3) Front Springs (w/part number if possible): B&G kit #XXXX
4) Rear Shocks: Koni Yellows - XXX-XXXX
5) Rear Springs: B&G kit #XXXX
6) Tire make and size: Kuhmo 712's 195/60R14
7) Rim make, model and size: CSA model unknown 14x6
8) Front Shock Setting (if appropriate): Two turns from full hard
9) Rear Shock Setting (if appropriate): 1.5 Turns from full hard
10) Ride height with empty car: (Measure from ground to fender lip) F=X" R=X"
11) Other suspension modifications: UrQ blue upper strut mounts.
12) Percentage of commuting use for vehicle: 60%
13) Percentage of 'sprited driving' use for vehicle: 30%
14) Percentage of Track use for vehicle: 10%
15) Alignment settings: Within Stock tolerences.
16) Please comment on how your suspension set-up feels, as well as it's
advantages and disadvantages: Tire pressures on the street: 34psi all corners.
On the track: 42psi front, 38psi rear. With the car set-up as it is, it makes
a fantastic track car. The car holds the track much better then with the stock
suspension set-up. Understeer is still apparent, but could be reduced with
another degree of negative camber on the front wheels. On the street the ride
is harsh. Speed-bumps feel like hitting curbs, and you feel every crack in the
road. Car handles like it's on rails at street appropriate speeds, however.
That should hopefully get everyone started. Please reply only to me, as I'll
be compiling all the information for members of the list to use. If I have
missed what you think is an important question, add your question/answer to the
list and I'll contact other 4kq owners to answer the question.
Thanks!!
-Dave
