If you open the A/C system Freon (R-12 Chlorofluorocarbon) at room
temperature will be a stable gas and won't puddle on your garage floor.
 It will however migrate into the stratosphere where UV radiation from
the sun will release the chlorine molecules and they will interact with
the O3 molecules and become Cl and O2 depleting the ozone layer.  An AC
shop might remove it for you for free since it has some value.
